Northwich Juniors crowned Cheshire Champions

Northwich Juniors have won the 4th annual Cheshire Team Champs match, held on Wednesday on the Bridgewater Canal at Lymm. 

The Northwich team, which included 4 of the original members who won the inaugural CADG event in 2010, only dropped a single section point to record a convincing win.


The Bridgewater Canal fished out-of-sorts, but there were fish to be caught for those with patience and perseverance. The clear winner on the day was Northwich's newest recruit, Scott Turnbull. Scott made the most of an end-peg draw and caught roach, perch and skimmers on the pole for a 2lb 8oz 7dr net. His catch was even more impressive considering he had to contend with the surface of the canal being covered in grass-cuttings, which an inconsiderate landowner dumped into the canal during the match. 

Runner up was Ryan Brown (Warrington Anglers) who managed an all-roach catch of 1lb 13oz 10drs caught mostly on breadpunch. Northwich's Alex Clegg made up the top 3 with a similar net of small roach taken on punch and pinkie.

  

Prince Albert AS Junior Open Match

Prince Albert Angling Society are hosting their popular annual junior open match on 27th July.
Lunch is provided for all competitors and parents are welcome to stay and watch.

Date: Saturday 27th July
Venue: Sandmere and Dovemere, Wash Lane, Allostock, Knutsford.
Registration and Draw: 8.45am until 10am
Fishing times: 11am until 3pm
Prize giving: 3:45pm
Finish 4:30pm

1. Age limit is from 7 to 16 years only
2. Competitors may only use one rod and line at a time
3. Competitors must fish with one hook only
4. All fish caught must be retained in a keepnet
5. All competitors must use a landing net to land all fish

Junior League Final Results

Sunday saw the cream of Cheshire's young anglers fish the final of the CADG Spring League, held at Sandmere and Dovemere. The weather was kind for once, and in places the fish were obliging too. Most of the 31-strong field opted for feeder tactics, as the pole line only seemed to be producing on the fancied A-section on Sandmere.

 
Clear winner on the day was Warrington Angler's Ryan Brown (below), who made the most of his end peg draw on Sandmere to put 20lbs of roach on the scales, caught on pole and waggler tactics with maggot as bait. 

The runner-up came from the opposite end of the match on Dovemere, where Mike Brough (Tameside Matrix) worked the feeder to take 15lb 3ozs of skimmers. Third place went to Callum Brown (Warrington) who was pegged next to his brother Ryan, and managed 12lbs of roach on pole / waggler tactics. 






The results on the day were crucial for the overall league placings, and Lewis Burrows (Tameside Matrix) proved to be the most consistent performer over the league, amassing a total of 88 points, just 3.5 points clear of runner-up Jack Whiteman of Warrington.

Warrington Anglers final day performance of 144.5 points out of a possible 165 secured their victory in the overall league team event. Tameside Matrix came in second and Northwich in third place.

Junior league match 3

The curse of the Cheshire Spring League bad weather continued, but it didnt affect the fishing on the Trent & Mersey canal. All of the 30-strong field of young anglers caught fish, and the overall weights were very close. 

The top weights came off the reeds near the pipe bridge at Billinge, where the bream and skimmers had shoaled up for spawning. The rest of the field were content to settle for gudgeon, with many anglers putting 30-50 fish on the scales.

Prince Albert AS starlet, Daniel Baxter made the most of his draw on the reeds with a fine net of bream, roach and gudgeon for 7lb 11oz.  

The runner-up came off the next peg, with local Northwich rod Alex Clegg putting 7lb 5oz on the scales. 

Just off the reeds, but still in the action was Tameside's Matty Farres, who had a fine net of skimmers and silvers taken on the punch and squatt for 5lb 6oz.

The final match in this league of 4 takes the juniors to PAAS water Sandmere next week, where the individual and team trophies will be decided. Last year's Spring League champion, Tom Heron, goes into the final match with a single point advantage over Matty Farres (Tameside), and several others in close attendance.

Junior League Match 2 Result

Cheshire Junior League moved to the Meridian Canal at Border Fishery for the 2nd match of the spring series. With cold overnight temperatures, again the fishing was tough for the young anglers. There was still a good turnout though, with 41 anglers fishing. The numbers were boosted by newcomers Disley & New Mills joining the fun, along with a handful of local club Bay Malton AC's regulars. 

Most weights on the day were made up with F1s and carp, although in some sections the fish seemed to be refusing to feed, leaving the youngsters to scratch around for silvers and perch for points. 

There was a close battle for the top spot, with Matty Farres (Tameside) on peg 40 giving Penketh & Old Hall's Ethan Neary a good run for his money from the next peg 41. Despite both lads catching F1s, in the end it was a single roach that made the difference, as Ethan pipped it by just 3ozs for a total weight of 10lbs 6oz.

On the opposite side of the lake, 'A' section was a real grueller, with most anglers only managing one or two bits. The exception was Sean Mulligan (Prince Albert AS), who fished superbly to put 7lbs 15oz of F1s on the scales for a convincing section win and third place overall. 

The next match sees the league move to the Trent & Mersey Canal (Sun 12 May).

Junior League Match 1 Result

Cheshire ADG's junior spring league kicked off today with a hard-fought match on the Bridgewater Canal at Warrington. 

With cold overnight temperatures, and a damp day to contend with, the conditions were against the young anglers, who were representing five teams from across the county.

Local experience paid off, and the winner by more than double his nearest rivals was Warrington Angler's hot rod, Adam Harman. 16-year-old Adam, who has been successful in local senior winter leagues, fished punched bread at 13m for a 3lb 8oz net of roach and small skimmers, from peg 36 near Red Brow underbridge. 

Pegged at the opposite end, near the motorway bridge, Tameside's starlet Callum Griffiths put together 1lb 11oz of silver fish, which was enough to tie with last year's Spring League winner, Tom Heron (Northwich), who also caught silvers on the breadpunch.

Fourth-placed angler, James Lomas, showed that perseverance counts, as he added a 1.25lbs perch in the dying minutes to boost his weight to 1lb 8oz.

Junior Spring League 2013

Cheshire ADG are pleased to announce the 2013 Junior Spring League. 

Following from last year's successful league, we are hosting 4 junior matches, on 4 different venues, as follows:

Sun 21 April - Bridgewater Canal, Preston Brook
Sun 28 April - Border Fisheries, Crewe
Sun 12 May - Trent & Mersey Canal, Rudheath
Sun 19 May - Sandmere & Dovemere, Allostock

All events are open to individual anglers aged under 18 on the day of the match. There will be individual and section prizes, plus trophies for the overall league winners. 

Draw times are 10am, fish 11am-3pm.

North West Inter-county match 2012

Heron soars as Cheshire retain Northwest Team title

Cheshire's junior anglers have successfully defended their Angling Trust North West Regional title, after beating Merseyside at Partridge Lakes.

The match, which took place on the Spey canal, was a close affair. Mild weather allowed for some decent fishing, with all of the young anglers catching fish. Most of the top weights were made up with carp, but there were plenty of other species caught, including roach, rudd, ide, tench, golden tench, chub and a lovely 1lbs 12oz perch caught by Danny Lambrenos.

The Cheshire team, all members of Prince Albert Angling Society, chose to target F1 carp and ide, using a worm and caster approach fished on the pole. Their practicing paid off as the team secured 4 out of 6 section wins to beat off the challenge of the skillful Merseyside team.

Leading the way, was Cheshire captain Tom Heron. After his success in the Cheshire Spring League, Tom has been in fine form this year. He showed his confidence here, landing a string of F1s on the pole and worm to put a match winning 28lbs 3oz on the scales. 

Runner-Up spot went to Sean Mulligan (Merseyside), who included a couple of larger carp in his net for 20lbs 5ozs. 

There was a tie for 3rd place, as Cheshire starlets Sarah Taylor and David Ball both registered 16lbs 11ozs.

Fundraiser Match Result

Penketh & Old Hall Angling Society were the triumphant winners in the first ever CADG fundraiser match. 

The match was fished at Bay Malton's Border Fishery on Sunday. Eight teams entered this first senior CADG event. It was a tough day's fishing, with overnight temperatures plummeting and putting the fish off the feed. 
All manner of baits and methods - worm, pellet, caster, maggot, corn, meat - you name it and it was tried as anglers tried to scratch together a winning net. After 5 hours though, the victorious angler was Rick Thompson (Twangers2) who managed 16lbs 14oz, giving him less than a pound margin over runner up John Bryan from Penketh. 

In the team event, Penketh & Old Hall AS came out on top. The team comprising Alan Lamb, James Bryan, John Bryan and Adam Hill put together a total winning weight of 45lbs 6oz.

Thank you to all the teams who took part, to Bay Malton AC for the kind use of the venue, and for Paul Bryan for helping with the results and photos. The event raised £110 for the Cheshire ADG.

PAAS win on Weaver

Prince Albert AS were the triumphant team in this years Cheshire Junior Team Champs.

The River Weaver at Hartford provided a very fair venue, on a scorching hot day. The competitors from 5 different Cheshire clubs were grateful for the refreshments provided on the day courtesey of Penketh & Old Hall AS.

The fishing was good, with lots of close weights and some of the section winners picking up points only by a margin of ounces.

Local Northwich rod Alex Clegg was the winner on the day, with a fine all-silverfish net for 5lbs 9ozs. That gave just a one ounce cushion over Warrington starlet, Adam Harman, who had a similiar catch for 5lbs 8oz. Third-placed Paul Bacon (Prince Albert AS) included a decent bream in his 4lb 8oz net.

In the team event, Prince Albert AS took home the team trophy with an 11 points score. Warrington and Northwich tied on points for 2nd, with Warrington taking runner up spot with a superior weight score.

2012 Cheshire Junior Team Championships announced

This year's team event will be held on the River Weaver, hosted by Northwich Anglers. Any interested clubs/teams should contact us asap for an application form.
The winning team will be invited to represent Cheshire in the forthcoming North West Inter-County match.

Eligibility: Teams of 6 anglers, aged under 18 on the day of the match

Northwich win Spring League

Northwich Anglers won the first Cheshire Spring League on Sunday. The final match of the league was fished at Prince Albert AS waters Sandmere and Dovemere. Northwich put on a convincing display on the day to secure victory, with three section wins and three 2nds. Warrington Anglers finished the league in 2nd, with Prince Albert AS in 3rd.

The Northwich team was led by individual match winner, Daniel Brown, who caught an 11lb 2oz carp in the first hour to put himself ahead of the field. Team-mate Alex Clegg worked hard on peg 1 to claw back the margin, but narrowly missed out after putting together 11lbs of roach.

League Champion - Tom Heron

Tom Heron (Prince Albert AS) took a gamble by fishing the tip for bigger fish, and it paid off with 3 good bream for a 10lbs 15oz net, enough to secure him the overall individual title. Alex Clegg came runner up, with Northwich's Lucas Bratt taking 3rd overall place.

Cheshire junior squad recruiting now

Cheshire ADG have joined the National Junior Angling Association (NJAA). We will be entering teams into this years NJAA competitions, starting with the Under 18s Champs on 16th June, at Aston Park Fisheries, Sheffield. 

If any young aspiring match anglers would like to nominate themselves for the Cheshire squad, please contact team manager, Martin James (see the Contact Us page). Please note: we only recruit young anglers who do not already fish for a team in the NJAA. 

Spring League Match 2

Atrocious weather conditions made the 2nd round of the Cheshire Spring League a gruelling contest for those who turned out to brave the wind and driving rain on Sunday.
 
More than half the field failed to catch fish, with most giving up due to the conditions. Despite numb hands and a broken umbrella, Northwich's Lucas Bratt managed to endure the weather and put together a fine match-winning net of gudgeon, roach and perch on the short pole for a 1lb 12oz victory.
Prince Albert team captain, Tom Heron took the runner-up spot with 1lb 3ozs, boosted by a quality roach.

On a day where every fish was worth important section points, the team event was won by Prince Albert AS, who registered three section wins (Danny Lambrenos, Joel Leese and Tom Heron). The result closes the gap for the league to just one point between Northwich (29pts) and Prince Albert (30pts). 


In the individual league, Alex Clegg (Northwich) claims top spot going into round 3, with a single point margin over teammate, Lucas Bratt.


The league continues in two weeks at Border Fishery.

 

Spring League match 1

Sunday saw 30 young anglers battle it out on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Rudheath for the first match of the spring league. 

Despite an early downpour, the rain held off for most of the match, and all of the young starlets managed to catch fish during the 4 hour contest. Hosts Northwich Anglers came out triumphant, and take a one-point advantage over local rivals Warrington Anglers to next week's match on the Bridgewater Canal.

Local rod, Tom Bunby made the best of an end peg opposite the marina entrance at Rudheath. Working with the long pole, Tom put together a match-winning 3lb 8oz net of roach, skimmers and gudgeon, to give him a small margin over 2nd place Ryan Brown (Warrington) who caught mostly skimmers on the far shelf. Bay Malton's James Lomas made up the 3rd podium place with a 3lb 2oz net of skimmers.

Most of the catches were made up of small gudgeon with odd bonus skimmers, although Sam Abols included a handsome 2lb 4oz perch in his net.

Junior Spring League announced

Four angling clubs in Cheshire will be hosting the first ever 'Junior Spring League' this year. The league will consist of a series of four matches in April and May, each held at a different venue. Two canals and two lakes are being used, to give the young anglers a taste of different types of angling, and to make for an interesting contest.

The host clubs are: Bay Malton Angling Club, Northwich Anglers, Prince Albert Angling Society and Warrington Anglers Association. 

All matches take place on Sundays (22 April, 29 April, 13 May, 20 May).

Cheshire starlets shine at Border

The cream of Cheshire's young angling talent attended the first Inter-regional event held by the ADB on Saturday 25th September. 

The event, hosted by the ADB Midlands region at Border Fishery near Crewe, was part of the Talent Pathway process, aiming to identify and develop elite anglers in preparation for international competitions. 

Amongst the North West squad was a contigent of Cheshire-based anglers, including Adam Harman, Tom Bunby, Lindon Brooks, Ryan Parr, Kaythan Shillito, Reiss Bratt, Ryan Brown and Shaun Gaskell. The "A" team were triumphant on the day, beating teams from the North East and Midlands on weight. Team Captain Ryan Parr also recorded the highest weight in the "A" team section.

Congratulations must go to another North West angler, Daniel Goulding from Liverpool, who skillfully landed a 12lb carp to record the highest weight on the day, earning himself a trophy in the process.

Cheshire team victorious in Inter-County event

Cheshire have won the inaugral North West Inter-County junior fishing event.

A team of 7 young starlets represented the county against teams from Greater Manchester and Merseyside. The match was fished on Saturday 20th August on the Bridgewater Canal at Preston Brook, Warrington.

The Cheshire team took a convincing victory, with Kaythan, Sean, Tom, Lindon and Reiss all putting together section-winning nets of small fish. The team amassed an impressive 18 out of a possible 21 points.


To add further gloss to the performance, team captain Kaythan Shillito also won the individual trophy, with a match-winning catch of 2090g of roach and skimmers taken on the long pole.


Congratulations to the team, and good luck to those who are selected to represent the North West of England in the forthcoming inter-regional events.
